I've been asked by a few, including John Harwood, how the Mk.6 fared at the Phillip Island historic event.

Well, on the Friday and Saturday it ran very strongly mid-field. That is until it succumbed to engine problems part way through Saturday where it was packed onto its trailer, joining its similarly stricken Bolwell stable-mates, not to be seen on the Sunday.

The Melmac

There have been quite a number of  Australian Specials based on Austin Healeys like the Mac Healey and even the Bolwell Mk.3. This one is the Melmac.

It was created by Mel McEwin in the 50s. Mel was a farmer in Casterton, Victoria when he was younger. He campaigned the car until he moved up to the next interesting car in his racing career and sold it to a friend and fellow Casterton farmer, Jim Kelly. Jim kept it in a shed for about 50 years, fully intending to do it up one day. That day never came and Jim died a few years back. Now the job has been taken on by one of Jim's sons so we may see it at historic meetings some time in the future.

Bolwell update 2

From Graham Nichols, the second update on the work on John Dickson's body - Sat. 23rd March.

So after the masking come the “all you need”…had a few issues with it, but sorted it out.

Then some colour around the doors and the inside of the bonnet….have to say that was the only fun part of today !!!!

Tomorrow morning (Sunday) I’ll go back to Smithfield and put the car back together and bring it back to Granville….then three rounds of sanding before heading back to Smithfield….so still a little way off but some progress has been made

The season is about to start and John Gourlay's latest creation (another Audi/Chev) is ready for action.

A brand new driver too. Should be interesting.

As well as getting organised for this season I found a few weeks to work on the new car. With Ron for ever helping I’ve built the power steer system very similar to the other car difference being rear of upright and forward of upright. I used a Subaru rack which suited the suspension lay out. Ron was good enough to make the mounts and modify the water pump pulley to do two jobs in stead of one. Most stuff at the front is finished for now. I’m expecting the trans axle back in about a week which will really move things along.

The Mark 5 model was represented by George's evergreen (although blue) example.

That's George and his son in pic 2. It was a delight to catch up with George after all these years. As it was with Chris C, the Szabos, Sean, Ron and lots of others.
