I preferred the little hands on stalks that a lot of the farm trucks had when I was growing up (early 70's). I never did see how they operated the passenger side one - a piece of string maybe?
I've only seen them on the driver's door. The hand was extended for a right turn and if you were going to stop you pulled a wire on the arm and the hand would turn 90 degrees into an upright position.
I must be old?? Every truck had mechanical hand signals when I was a kid. When I did my driving test in an FJ we had to actually do hand signals. On my Mum's Austin when the trafficators used to stick you had to thump the central pillar to make them pop out. Ah yes, foot off throttle, apply brakes, correct steering as old Austin steering boxed were always sloppy, move trafficator lever, thump door pillar, move to centre of road and turn right. Turning left we didn't worry about it too much. Not too much traffic in those days either. I guess when you learned to drive JL you had to find a friend brave enough to walk in front of the car holding a red flag? Not that old? Ooops. Col
